What’s on your bookshelf?

by Lindsay on May 3, 2011

It’s finally May, which means that the unofficial start of summer is so close I can taste it. Summer, for me, means lots of book reading on family trips. My friend lent me a few books by essayist/music critic Chuck Klostermann. If you know me, and would love to read books that basically mimic my outlook on many pop culture things in the style in which I speak, I highly recommend them. The friend who loaned them to me is 100% my brother of another mother, we’re basically the same person. Taking a book recommendation from him about pop culture was guaranteed to be a solid win.

Another friend, who is a writer of truly wonderful fan fiction, recommended The Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon. Amazon had used ones for a buck, so I picked one up. It’s my next book to read, but as a person who’s not always into sci-fi, I’m curious as to whether or not I’ll be able to get into it. I’ll keep you all posted.

Over the winter, I read the gloriously witty and engaging Life From Scratch by our own Melissa Ford. It’s everything chick lit could and should be – fun, yet not dumbed down in the slightest. If you don’t have it on your summer reading list, you should add it now. No, seriously, go add it. I’ll wait.

I’m looking for new recommendations as well, however. I just got a first generation iPad off craigslist for cheap from someone upgrading to an iPad2. My intent is to use it as an e-reader as much as possible, so that I always have my books with me. What books are you reading? What genres do you like? What are your favorite fiction and non-fiction books?

Definitely the Outlander series With the first book, it starts a little slow, so I’d give it the first 100 pages before you back out.

Non-fiction: anything by Bill Bryson or Malcolm Gladwell. Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods is hysterical.

Oh, for beach reads — try The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig. It’s now a series. Fabu!

So my recent reads are a little bit on the “heavier” (okay not that heavy) side… I’m finishing Nine Parts of Desire by Geraldine Brooks. I’ve found it very timely with my upcoming trip and also the world events. I also just finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I guess it’s being made into a movie now, who knew…not me. One of my silly favorite books is The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. I read too much so I best stop before your list is a mile long but if you want more suggestions you know how to find me :)
